For those who are just purchasing their first electric vehicle or EV charger, you may have some basic questions about how charging works. Generally speaking, there are three charging “levels” to consider within the EV charging world:

• Level 1: Generally involving only the charger that was included by your electric vehicle’s manufacturer, this type of charging is most commonly utilized at home. Most Level 1 EV chargers can be plugged into any basic 120-volt outlet, while the other end plugs directly into the car itself. Level 1 averages about 200 kilometers, or just under 125 miles, of charging during a 20-hour charge period. 

• Level 2: Level 2 chargers, on the other hand, are sold separately from the car – though often purchased simultaneously in many cases. These chargers plug into a 240-volt outlet, which allows for faster charging than the Level 1 charger, and utilize an SAE J1772 connector. Many Level 2 chargers will require installation by a professional. These chargers can usually charge that same 125 miles as a Level 1 option in just five hours, rather than 20. 


• Level 3: Level 3 chargers, on the other hand, are usually found in public settings, and also sometimes called DCFC or DC Fast Chargers. These are the fastest available, charging for 125 miles in just 30 minutes. Some EVs will not be able to use these chargers, however.
